Ooops.

Some hiatus, ey pals?  Over a year?  Sorry!  : (  I started another blog that gets most of my attention now, it’s not so topic specific.

Anyway….if I can muster the interest I’ll post some finds over the summer.  No promises.

Hiatus …..

So it’s been a very, very long time, ey?  Sorry, loves… I just get so wound up and excited about yard sale season, and I hit it so hard that I run out of steam quickly.

Since I last posted, my life has changed quite a bit.  I quit my job, moved halfway across the country, and am now living in SK helping out my grandparents.  The great part is that they have scads of retro and vintage stuff.  I’ve been blessed with some pretty neat stuff…..most notably a BOATLOAD of vintage tupperware.  SCORE!

There are yard sales everywhere here…even in the winter!  I definitely feel at home.  : )

I hope you’ll tune back in come spring time….I should have lots of fun things to report.  I won’t be posting much, if anything between now and then….but you never know, I guess.  Happy hunting, and may your bargains be plentiful!

Bargains, ho!

Hello, my happy little hunters!

So while I’ve been enjoying the ramp up to yard sale season with the occasional yard sale, today was really my full-out bargain-hunting day this year.  To-date I have found some neat-o things; a vintage electric frying pan (great for pancakes and such), jewelry, books, records, stuff for my nieces & nephews, etc)….

Today, however, I was in full swing sale-ing mode (with roomie in tow) – and HARD TO PORT, because BARGAINS, HOOOOOOOO!  What a day, me hardees!  Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the pirate-isms…. but you can hardly blame me since I’m so revved up about the fun I had and the bargains I found.   I took pictures of most everything I picked up today – you’ll find them below.

It all started with a notoriously awesome annual sale at a friend’s church – wicked stuff, jaw-dropping prices.  There I scored a vintage owl kitchen utensil holder, scads of tupperware cylindrical lidded bins, two great Maude Lewis-esque framed prints, a DIY wedding planner, a teensy matriaska (Russian wooden doll), nesting cube shelves, and a vintage jewellry box.

After that we (my roommate and I) cruised around looking for free stuff while keeping our eyes peeled for other sales….  Today was apparently “leave free stuff at the curbside” day, and we picked up a number of neat items from that.  I got an LL Bean toiletries travel kit, in mint condition, a fisher price toy phone for my nephew, and a leather bag.  My roomie got a wooden coffee table, folding chair, & ice cube  trays for her BF, and a tealite/jewelry tray for herself.

At other sales I picked up a cute miniature folk art rooster, vintage earrings, italian leather bus pass holder, baby bjorn carrier for my sister, vintage lidded tupperware “shot glasses” (plastic, teensy, for salad dressing), silver plated jewelry tray (the one with the donkey on it), sterling silver ring, etc.

We also discovered this little gem of an antique store about 8-9 blocks from our apartment that has a treasure trove of vinyl and antique books.  *LOVE*  My roomie spied for me a 1946 special edition of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland,” and “Through the Looking Glass.”  Two hard/cloth covered books in a boxed set.  $10 bucks.  Amaaaaaazing!

She is big into Star Wars, and has a soft spot for Ewoks, I spied for HER a vintage SEALED Ewoks board game.  $10 bucks.  She also got a couple wicked antique postcards and a neat old book of prayers for girls that was printed in 1926.

As you can see, it was a fun and bargain filled day!  I got my garage-sale-ing groove back, and got to share the joy of rummaging with my best pal!  Good times, good times.

Well, that’s it for now I think!  I’ll try to be a bit more diligent now about posting my finds – *wink.  It was a perfect day today, the weather was fantastic, sunny with a cool breeze – and then when we were winding down it got a bit overcast and settled into a slow rain.  I’ve the the window cracked so I can smell the fresh air, and hear the rain hitting the pavement – and I’m going to curl up with a book and my peppermint tea – thanks for stopping by!

Happy hunting!  GARRRrrrrrr!

Lazy Hazy Days of Winter…

Long time, no blog, ey?

Sorry pals!  I know you’ve all been dying to know what I’ve been doing with myself since saling season ended…  and I wish I had titillating details for you, but I don’t.  Just been livin’, lovin’, cooking, crafting, and so forth.

I must confess, I really lost my gusto towards the end of saling season.  I started earlier last year than I ever have, and went longer than I usually do, and ended up tired and grumpy and frustrated.  Not good.  I think in some way I almost felt like I had to sale so I could blog about it…  and I just ran out of things to say, so I quit saling and (subsequently) blogging.

I’ve participated in a couple sales since then, though – which means I’ve been able to purge quite a bit.  That’s good news – it means I won’t have to feel overly guilty about the random tidbits I pick up…. although I’m getting better about that – trying to figure out if I really am taken with an item, or if it’s an impulse buy.  My room-mate thinks I have hoarding tendancies, and I’m starting to agree with her.   : )  I’ve therefore decided to tame my inner bargain hunter and only buy what I can’t live without, and/or what I need/can actually use for something. Except I don’t try to convince myself to buy something – I’m learning the Zen practice of “love it or leave it.”  Well, it’s not really a Zen practice – but you catch my drift.

I’m still paring down some stuff, it’s a gradual process, but it always feels good to be rid of excess.  As someone who loves her knick-knacks, I have a supreme dislike of clutter.  Those are very conflicting mindsets, but I try not to let them rule me.  Sadly, the knick-knacks sometimes invade – so I get to sorting through what should stay, and what should go.

I DO sound like a hoarder.  Perhaps you may say I’m in denial, but I promise you my place is not floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall STUFF.  And perhaps I’m fooling myself, but I tend to think most people go through their stuff cyclically.  I try to go through my stuff at least four times a year.  That way, anything I may have been unsure about keeping or tossing can be decided upon, and I can revamp the way things are organized.  I love organizing.  I love bargain hunting… hence, the occasional sift and sort are inevitable.

So tomorrow, my church is having a LOVE HAITI benefit yard sale… I can’t wait!  The season hasn’t even started yet, and I get to shop for deals.  I’ll post pix later if I find anything cool!  If you live in Halifax, NS – it’s on February 13th from 9am-2pm @ 28 Willett Street.  I’m taking a rubbermaid bin full of donations… let’s just hope I don’t come home with that bin filled again.  : )

Happy hunting!

Helter Skelter…

…so it’s been a busy week.  Sorry I haven’t had time to post!  I didn’t yard sale last Saturday.  I think that had made about two or three weeks in a row.  I lost the drive to sale for a while there…  There’s so much going on my life right now, and things are so busy that I barely have any alone time.  I’ve been taking advantage of my Saturday mornings to sleep in or to lounge about.  It’s been WONDERFUL!

I’m happy to report that I managed to haul myself out of bed this morning though, and went to one sale.  Of the sales I had plotted, only one was NOT cancelled due to the weather conditions.  It was worth it though, I found some great treasures!!  See for yourself:

-scads of jewelry!  Earrings, necklaces, barrettes, etc
-beautiful Joe Fresh short sleeve blouse
-GREEEEEEEN Old Navy thin sweater (part Cashmere!)
-photo box frame (will be re-crafting it)
-wicked ornate antique-looking plaster photo frame
-ten pieces of Vinyl (three will be gifted!)
-two cookie jars (both will be gifted)
-two small pottery pots
-pottery mug (has a slight crack/teeeeeny hole on one side -will use as a planter)
-old playing cards in hinged case
-WICKED.OLD.TEAPOT

I think that’s it…  I’ll edit the list later if I recall anything I might have forgotten.

I’m slowly starting another sweep of my “stuff” in preparation to have another sale.  I’m both dreading it and eagerly anticipating it.  : )  I’ll be glad to be rid of even MORE excess.  I’ll keep you posted as the cleansing progresses!

Happy saling!

heads up…

So I didn’t sale last Saturday like I’d intended.  I can’t complain though, I was wicked tired, and of the microscopic amount of sales being held, only two were remotely interesting.  I can’t say I was disappointed, I hadn’t truly  slept in on a Saturday morning for weeks.  It was DELICIOUS.

I can’t promise I’ll be able to rouse myself in the morning either – but I’m sure gonna try!  There aren’t many Halifax sales advertised for tomorrow, but there are about four or five that seem interesting.  I’ve got my route mapped out for the morning, not that it’s extensive or anything, what with the handful of sales I jotted down.  Hopefully there’ll be some good finds – I’ll post tomorrow with my treasure discoveries… If’n I can haul myself out of bed to unearth them.  : )

Happy saling!!

nifty thrifty finds… (June 27/09)

So I have some good news and some bad news….  I’ll give you the bad news first.  The bad news is that I stayed up STUPID late last night and therefore missed my alarm this morning.  That meant I was late waking up, and I almost dismissed saling altogether today.  Am I ever glad I didn’t!

Despite a late start, I was actually overprepared and only went to the prime sales on my list.  Having mapped my route last night, I had made a mental note of the sales I’d strike from my list if time was constrained.  I saled quick and fierce today, my friends!  The early bird might have got the worm this morning, but I wrastled him for it.

All told I hit about ten sales, some of which were multi-family/street.  Like last weekend, I didn’t buy a lot, but what I did buy is fantastic, and I got wicked deals.  I also met an interesting lady who’s moving out West, and is selling some FABULOUS vintage furniture pieces.  Unfortunately I don’t have space for them where I’m living now, but if I can find storage, there’s one piece in particular I’d love to have.  It’s an old buffet, hardwood, in amazing condition (other than that it’s painted an awful colour), with antique brassy hardware.  It has a wee little mirrored hutch that sits on the top at the back.  I’m thinking about it.  I’ll keep you posted.

I know you’re all annoyed because you just want to know what I picked up – so here’s my list:

Sale #1:
- Wee little kitchsy brass owl figurine
- Antique short silver lighter (I think this is becoming a THING for me…)

Sale #2:
-Retro Fisher Price ring-stack toy… remember that?  Little white plastic post with five graduated colour rings that stack on it?  …for my sister’s little TBA

Sale #3:
- GORGEOUS green pottery Patio Fire Pot (retail, about $30-40), brand new, tags still on it, fuel pod inside.  Guess who’s having roasted marshmallows tonight?  $5, btw.  Talked’em down from $10.

Sale #4:
-Antique Fisher Price “teaching” Clock toy… for my sister’s little TBA

Sale #5:
-Collector’s edition Cribbage set (Tin w/ wooden Crib board, cards)
-Six pieces of vinyl for my ever-growing collection:

  • Elton John, Greatest Hits
  • Joni Mitchell, Ladies of the Canyon
  • Bob Seger & tSBB, Nine Tonight
  • Culture Club, Colour by Numbers
  • The Care Bears Adventures in Care-a-lot
  • Bob & Doug McKenzie, Great White North

Sale #6:
-Leather sling bag
-Yahtzee (for the two full pads inside (it’s six bucks for one replacement pad at the store… I paid .50 cents for the game, and it came with two full pads)
-Christmas craft magazine

Sale #7:
-Stainless steel ice bucket & tongs (SO cute… it’s short and fat and round… like me)  : )
-Three wicked Christmas ornaments that I’ll use to decorate gifts with come this  December
-WICKED big round flat green iridescent pillow

Sale #8:
-so I didn’t actually BUY anything at this one… YET.  This is the sale where I met the neat artsy/crafty lady with the cool tools and furniture.  If I can scrape up enough, I’ll go back and barter.

Sale #9:
-Vintage pb copy of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”

Sale #10:
-Vintage chrome/ss wall-mountable rod/rack with hooks attached (for hanging utensils, etc)

So there it is… those are my finds this week!  The weather couldn’t have been better – it was slightly sunny, slightly overcast.  That’s my fave saling conditions because it’s warm enough NOT to have to bulk up with sweaters, but cool enough that you’re not sweating to death.

Some great finds, no doubt!  My fave find of the day – gosh, I dunno… it’s probably a toss-up between my little brass owl (have had my heart set on one for AGES) and the gorgeous green ceramic Fire Pot.  There was a near miss/find today too – I spotted a set of classic Tupperware mixing bowls, but two of the bowls were missing their lids.  : (

All told, I might have spent $20 bucks… not even, actually.  I dickered like crazy today, and got most everything for .25-.50 cents.

You know what’s REALLY fantastic?  I realized in preparing last night (whilst loading my change purse) that I’m STILL saling on the money I made at the sale I participated in about four weeks ago.  Rad, ey?  I’m going to have another yard sale in two-three weeks I think…  which means I need to get sorting again.  Can’t wait to get reid of even MORE excess!

Well that’s it – I think maybe I’ll read for a while on the porch, maybe curl up on the couch and have a snooze…   I plan to LAZE for the rest of the day.  I’m eagerly awaiting a Sushi outing with my main homegirls later – a bit of a farewell to one of them… then maybe a walk on the boardwalk later and some Cow’s Ice Cream?  Sounds like a plan.  : )

Thanks for stopping by and sharing my joy!  Looking forward to next week – there will be some kickass sales to be had!!  I’ll keep you posted!

Happy saling!

same old, same old…

Not much to post, really…  I’m all mapped out for the morning.  The best news is that the weather is supposed to be great – around thirteen degrees and overcast (but no rain!!).  Hopefully that means it’ll be warm but not too hot, and a slight breeze to keep things cool.

The OTHER best news is that while there are only about 8-9 sales that interest me (that I’ve actually plotted), and at least four of those are multi-family or street sales.  I’m sure, as always, that there will be a few odd sales along the way that I didn’t bargain for… but I am still pretty wiped from last weekend, so I’m going to try to keep it low key.

I’ll try and remember to post my finds tomorrow so I don’t forget what I picked up.

Happy saling!

nifty thrifty finds… (June 20/09)

So I hit the dusty trail with Porkchop around 8am after an adventure.  The Craftinista was slated to join us, but was sadly unable to this week… perhaps another time?

Anyway – as always, I had mapped our saling route the night before.  I plotted the sales I knew we’d both want to hit, and budgeted time for the sales we’d likely find along the way.  I even marked down a couple as possibilities that we’d probably not have time for, just in case we did.

Even though the forecast called for rain, it held off, and the weather was actually really nice.  There was a cool breeze, it was slightly overcast, and there was just enough heat to keep it pleasant but not sweaty.

Overall I was really pleased with the events of the day – found a couple of fantastic sales that weren’t even advertised when I was mapping the night before.  Let’s see if I can remember what I picked up…. this is what happens when I don’t post the same day – or at least make a list of my finds!  I’ll be more careful in the future, I promise… in the meantime – see below…

-a suitcase FULLLL of My Little Ponies (70+) for my friend Mel, who’s a Pony fiend.   She was excited, to say the least… this was by FAR my best find of the day.

-vintage slimline Sony cassette walkman
-classic tupperware meat tenderizing covered container
-Qtip tin
-vintage Fisherman’s friend tin
-IKEA vase
-wicked cool tiny retro  lamp… BLINDINGLY bright
-BIZARRE antique looking switch/dial box
-the BREAKFAST CLUB SOUNDTRACK on VINYL !!! (swapped Porkchop Baby Beluga for it)
-baby clothes for my sister’s little TBA
-two books, and the backpack toy from Dora, for my niece
-a replacement Cabbage Patch Kids lunchbox for my roomie
-black leather card fold (small wallet)
-two Wintersleep cd’s
-three vintage looking prints (have to frame them)
-two more antique wooden hangers (for displaying pics)

That’s all I can think of for now…  I really didn’t get a lot for myself, but it was still good bargain hunting!  it was nice to have company for the day, but I’m looking forward to flying solo for the next couple weeks too.  I’ve really developed a groove when I sale solo, and am excited to get back to it.  I’ve received a couple hot tips on some neat sales over the next couple weekends, and can’t wait to see what there is to see.  I’ll keep you posted!

Happy saling!!

nifty thrifty finds (June 13/09)

Delayed posting, much?  Sorry, campers… I had a wicked busy week and didn’t have time to post my findings from last Saturday till now… my apologies.  I’ll try not to let it happen again!  ; )

I hit some AMAZING sales last Saturday.  Truth be told, I was a little overwhelmed.  There were sales everwhere I turned, and even the ones I had plotted were ridiculously fantastic.  The crappy part of posting my finds so late like this, is that I’m  now having trouble remembering what all I picked up.  But now that I think about it, it’s coming back to me.  The items that come to mind were definitely my best finds anyway – so take a peek at my list…

-vintage weathered leather tote (FREE!)
-vintage (blank) Winnie-the-Pooh baby book
-MEC satchel
-kitchsy old vintage mint green counting machine
-antique old blue window
-oval shaped art (frame: aged wood, icy blue / picture: wintery farm scene)
-old fine knitting needles
-small pottery pot
-two cookie jars (one is a gift, I swear!)
-brass bugle
-foot spa ($3 bucks – BRAND NEW, accessories still in original wrapping)
-vintage glass lemonade pitcher
-classic tupperware dressing pitcher
-vintage Scrabble
-three SWEEEEET novels I’ve been jonesing for
-an angel crafty thing for my mom
-white washed wooden tray
-classic tupperware chip n’ dip plate w/ built in lidded bowl
-vintage jewelry box
-shamrock brooch
-antique silver lighter (not entirely sure why?)
-loose tea strainer (sits on rim of the mug)
-hardcover Company’s Coming Christmas book

That’s all I can remember for now – I’ll edit the list later if I can think of anything else.  All in all it was a great day for saling – slightly overcast, not too hot, not too cold.  The prices were right, deals were struck, and I had a lovely day bombing around the city!  This may sound strange, and maybe egotistical (not my intention), but I am really starting to enjoy my own company!  One of the best parts of the day was meeting up with my mom and pops for the last couple sales.  Then I went to their house and made us some Eggs Benny w/ honey cured ham on potato scallion bread.  MMM mmmm…

That about wraps it up for LAST Saturday – stay tuned for updates on TODAY’s finds!           : )

Happy saling!
